Look, before you say that I’m thinking with my some other part of my anatomy, just listen to this and tell me there ain’t nothin’ there.
I mean, besides the obvious visual, uh, accouterments (cute jacket, nice shoes, etc.).
Anyway, she’s my favorite (for now) for AI9. She’s got quirk, and I love quirk.
Listen to this one too. This one I think actually makes a stronger case for why she should be the next American Idol:
Yes, I know. She’s probably a Massachusetts flaming liberal, but so what? She can sing. She probably even has gay friends if she lives on Cape Cod. But heck, I’ll bet even Elton John has gay friends and that doesn’t stop him from being a rock icon.
I just didn’t want to comment upon until we were done with Geek-o-Rama. Simon believes that AI will “find someone truly great this year.” But he says something along those lines every year. Next week we should begin to get some inkling of what the competition will really look like. Apparently this year there will be 36 semi-finalists instead of 24, and there will also be a “wild-card” round. Well, OK, anything to shake up an aging formula.
Unusually this year I am willing to go out on a limb and pick my personal favorite very early in the process. I predict that Casey Carlson will go all the way…er, I mean, will be in the finals. I missed her audition, but I heard she can sing.
I wasn’t thinking what you’re thinking I was thinking. I was just thinking that she has that “x-factor” that Simon is always talking about.
UPDATE: I was half right, America was entirely right. To my happy surprise, two deserving contestants, David Hernandez and Syesha Mercado were voted into the top 12 while one deserving, Danny Noriega, and one toss-up, Asia’h Epperson, went home. Let’s just hope that the voters continue to be this rational through the rest of the season.
For me, this has been the toughest Idol season ever. Despite my not agreeing entirely with the judges picks for the top 24, I have to concede that there were no real clunkers in the group. No one that I wanted to see in the top 12 has been eliminated yet although a few of my early favorites have disappointed. Continue reading
I think the song isn’t that bad, and Renaldo’s got some voice on him that just isn’t apparent because of the circumstances.Anyway, the next time you hear this song sing along:
I am your brother
Your best friend forever
Singing the songs, the music that you li-i-i-i-ke
We’re brothers to the end of time
Together forever till the end of the time
I am your brother
Your best friend forever
Singing the songs, the music that you li-i-i-i-ke
We’re brothers till the end of time
Together or not you’re always in my heart
Your hurt, your feelings in you will worry no more
I love you brother
And I defy you to get this tune out of your head anytime soon.
Seriously, Renaldo: If Nigel Lithgow doesn’t take care of you, drop me a line. I think you’ve got a future and I’ll do what I can to help you get there.
Can you believe that it’s already time for American Idol again? Well, not the show. We won’t be seeing that until January. But auditions begin today in San Diego. And in case you are just absolutely certain that this is your year — or you just want to give it a go — here’s the rules and regs:
Call it unfair that the final song (the winner of the AI songwriting contest) was so much more suitable for Jordin than for Blake, but even putting that aside, Jordin did what she needed to do to win and Blake didn’t Continue reading
OK, let’s cut to the chase: Melinda Doolittle goes home tonight.
Because she wasn’t as good as Blake and Jordin? Of course not. Remember who went home last year at this time? Elliott Yamin, and you can’t tell me Taylor Hicks sang better than he did. Continue reading
One of the worst nights of an already spotty season for American Idol.
Jordin “won” the night with a middling performance of “A Woman in Love” and a terrific performance of “To Love Somebody” especially when compared to everyone else.
Blake’s first attempt, “You Should Be Dancing” was dreadful — and it should have been good. I think the falsetto just drained the energy out of the performance. I thought that his rendition of “This Is Where I Came In” was much better than the judges gave him credit for. I also think that performance was more than enough to keep his — and Chris Richardson’s — fans happy for another week.
Melinda disappointed me with “Love You Inside Out” and “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.” Both performances seemed perfunctory, and I get the sense that she just isn’t in to it anymore. If the show reveals the top two/bottom two this week, I expect her to be in the bottom two and perhaps even gone next week.
Lakisha sang something. My prediction for this week: Lakisha Jones goes home.
Melinda was great, as usual. Lakisha rocked it out, etc., etc. You know how it went and what you think about how it went. You don’t need yet another opinion from me. So that’s exactly what you’re going to get.
Really, the one stand out performance of the night, for me, was Blake Lewis bringing new life and a decidedly unexpected twist to a two decade old rock anthem, You Give Love a Bad Name. That boy is the most interesting Idol contestant that I can remember. His arrangement wasn’t merely novel, it was energetic and gripping. I loved it.
OK, on to predictions: Chris Richardson and Lakisha Jones go home tonight. Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks will be the final two.
